Triage Appointments System

Since July 2018 Milton Surgery has been running a triage system.

The system is much better and allows you to speak to a doctor about your problem on the day you phone. This will nearly always be the doctor of your choice. There are very large numbers of appointment slots available every day in this system, so it will be very rare for you to have any difficulty in getting things sorted out.

Here’s how it works:

You phone the surgery between 8am and 10am if possible. Earlier is better.
Our trained receptionists will ask for some brief details to help decide how urgent your situation is. These details will help the receptionist to determine who is best placed to assist with your query.
You will be offered a choice of doctors, or if your problem can be dealt with by another health expert like a nurse, a pharmacist, or an optician then you can have information provided about those services too (please see the Sign Posting leaflet).
You will not be given an appointment time by the receptionist but the doctor you choose will phone you back within an hour or so and will discuss the best plan for helping you. This means that you will ALWAYS be able to speak to a doctor when you need to.
When the doctor phones you they will discuss your query. Many queries can be dealt with on the phone, but some will require a face to face appointment. In these instances the doctor will discuss this with you and find an appropriate time/date (this could be the same day or a later date, depending on your personal situation).
After you have had your appointment, if the doctor needs to see you again in the following weeks then you will be given a suitable appointment.
Please make sure your contact phone number is up to date so that we can reach you when we call back. The doctor will use a mobile phone to call you back so please be aware of this when answering your phone or if you use a call manager or call blocking system. Our phone number often shows up as 0131 536 5032. Please note that you will not be able to phone this number back. If you need to phone the surgery for any reason you will need to use 0131 549 7300.
- 0131 536 5032 is a generic number used within NHS Lothian and may have come from any department within NHS Lothian. Missed calls from this number are not necessarily from Milton Surgery.
If you are unable to attend an appointment, please phone the surgery and cancel. This will allow us to book another patient into that slot, thereby freeing up future appointments.
